"Trust the Process" Art Exhibition Opening at Fresh A.I.R. Gallery

July 24, 2020

Fresh A.I.R. Gallery - 131 N High St, Columbus, OH

Drug-related crimes are a leading cause of incarceration in Ohio, the epicenter of the opioid epidemic, where about 79,000 people are currently behind bars. The need for nuanced understanding of this crisis, and potential solutions to it, has never been greater. However, often missing from these conversations are the voices of those directly affected: incarcerated individuals themselves.

As a transformative means of expression and dialogue, art offers a valuable opportunity to change this. Fresh A.I.R. Gallery and the Ohio Prison Arts Connection are seeking artwork by currently and formerly incarcerated individuals affected by substance abuse, with selected pieces to be featured in a group exhibition at Fresh A.I.R. Gallery in autumn 2020. How does art help us better understand the intersection of substance abuse and incarceration? What kinds of roles does art play in one’s healing and reentry into society? How can incarcerated artistic voices help reshape existing narratives and inform policy decisions? We hope the artwork on display will explore these kinds of questions and generate further discussion.

The opening reception takes place Friday, July 24, 5-7pm.

The exhibit will be open until September 11.
